Snow-Rated Roof Selection and Seasonal Maintenance
When planning a new transit shelter in a location that receives winter weather, extra steps must be taken. This starts with selecting the right structure and continues after installation.
Building Code Compliance and PE-Stamped Engineering Drawings
During the planning phase, select a design that meets and exceeds the code requirements for the installation location. Austin Mohawk can assist with this process by providing PE-stamped drawings and calculations. These drawings and calculations can then be submitted to the local authorities (if required) to ensure code compliance.
Snow Load Roof Options for Bus Shelters and Passenger Waiting Structures
Austin Mohawk offers several roof designs that are built for snow.
Light to Moderate Snow Climates
Our polycarbonate barrel roof and acrylic dome roof options are great for areas that receive light to moderate snow. These roofs provide curved surfaces to help prevent snow from accumulating.
Heavy Snow Load Transit Shelters
For ultimate snow capabilities, consider either a steel flat roof or a hip roof. The flat roof can be designed with internal support structures that can hold some of the highest snow loads seen in the lower 48 states. Hip roofs combine this strength with a pitched roof that prevents snow from accumulating. Hip roofs can be optioned with snow retention bars to prevent large amounts of snow and ice from falling off the roof.
Pre-Winter Transit Shelter Maintenance Checklist
Once a transit shelter is installed, there are also some maintenance requirements to ensure safety and longevity. Prior to the winter season:
- Ensure all gutters are clear of debris, such as leaves and branches, so that winter snow and ice melt can properly drain.
- Check any exposed fasteners to ensure they are tight.
- Clean aluminum shelters periodically to remove salt buildup. Aluminum shelters are very resistant to corrosion but still require periodic cleaning of any salt buildup to ensure maximum longevity and appearance. Use a mild detergent and water with a nylon brush to remove stains and surface dirt. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
Long-Term Performance in Winter Climates
Following these steps will ensure a safe, reliable transit shelter that will provide many years of service in any winter climate.
